What Your Student Could Have Done by August If They Start Their Essay Now
Imagine two students approaching August. Both are entering their senior year, intelligent, capable, and with plenty to write about. They both have college applications due in the fall and need to complete their essays beforehand.
The first student spent June and July as most do, relaxing, working, traveling, and enjoying summer activities. The essay remained on their to-do list, with the belief that there was always more time. August seemed soon enough.
Now it's August. Their schedule is filling up. School starts in three weeks, and the essay is still unwritten. What was once a wide-open opportunity has turned into a looming deadline.
The second student began in June. Not because they were stressed or behind, but because someone helped them see that the essay deserved more than just meeting a deadline and summer was the perfect time to dedicate to it.
By August, this student has a draft they are truly proud of. They've had time to reflect, step away, return, and improve it. They've realized their initial topic wasn't quite right and found the one that truly resonates. They're entering senior year with one of the toughest parts of the application already completed.
This difference is significant. It influences the entire fall.
What starting in June actually offers a student.
Time to think before writing. The best essay topics aren't usually discovered immediately. They emerge gradually through honest reflection and the right questions. Students who begin in June have weeks to let an idea evolve before committing to it. Those starting in August go with whatever comes to mind.
Time to step away and return. Every strong essay I've seen has been rewritten at least once, often more. This process of rewriting isn't optional. It's how essays go from good to great. It requires distance, and distance requires time.
Time to find their voice and perspective, so their story can shine without a rubric or right answer. Finding that voice requires drafts, patience, and more time than most families anticipate.
Time to feel prepared, so their essay is a source of confidence. Where the student enters October knowing their personal statement is strong, allowing them to focus on supplements, visits, and decisions. This version of fall is possible but only for students who started early enough to achieve it.
What the workshop offers your student.
The College Essay Kickstart Workshop on June 10th is designed to be the starting point that makes all of this possible. In two hours, students engage in a structured brainstorming process to uncover topics that are genuinely theirs, learn how to shape a personal story into an essay with direction and momentum, and leave with a working outline.
This isn't the end of the process. It's the beginning, with enough summer ahead to let the essay reach its potential. Your student has a story to tell. The workshop is where they start discovering it.
This is the last week to register for June 10th.
Spots are limited and are filling up now. $109 per student. The session runs from 4 to 6 PM. A second session is available on June 30th for families needing more time.
If the essay is on your summer list, this is where it starts. Register here.
